“If I had been outside prison, I would have died. But God put me in prison to save my life.”
Woei never expected prison to be the place where his life, and his faith, would be saved.
After decades marked by gangs, drug addiction, and repeated incarceration, Woei entered prison for the third time facing a 13-year sentence. At 56 years old, he believed his story might be coming to an end. Then, in 2019, everything changed. While incarcerated, he was diagnosed with cancer and moved into isolation in a prison hospital ward. Alone, weak, and facing multiple surgeries, Woei cried out to God.
“I told God, if You can still use me, preserve my life. If not, bring me home.”
Over the months that followed, Woei underwent three major surgeries and spent time in the ICU. Against all expectations, he recovered. Just before his release, doctors declared him completely healed and discharged him from medical care. They called it luck. Woei knew it was mercy.
During his incarceration, Woei enrolled in Crossroads Bible studies. As a new Christian, he had many questions about sin, forgiveness, and what it truly means to follow Jesus. Through his studies and the guidance of his mentors, those questions were answered with clarity and Scripture.
“The courses gave me a very clear picture—direct teaching from the Bible. Many things I believed before were wrong, and the lessons helped me understand the truth.”
Studying wasn’t easy. Woei hadn’t been in school for decades. But he was determined to change—not just his circumstances, but his heart. Crossroads gave him a solid foundation of faith during one of the darkest seasons of his life.
Today, Woei is newly released and learning how to rebuild life outside prison. He’s reconnecting with his church, walking closely with Christian brothers, and starting a new job with a fellow believer who is mentoring him professionally and spiritually. The pressures are real, but so is his resolve.
“God has given me a second chance. I want to grab it and keep it.”
Through Crossroads, students like Woei are discovering hope, purpose, and a faith that carries them forward long after release.
