Jane never imagined that she would one day find herself in prison. “Prison is like a hospital. You never know when you will fall sick,” she shared in an interview. Growing up on a farm in western Kenya and training as a teacher, she spent nearly 13 years in the classroom before life took an unexpected turn.
At first, Jane believed she had left God outside the prison walls. But she soon discovered that “He is in prison—closer than I ever thought. Were it not for Him, I would have lost hope. I would just be a number among many prisoners. But because of that hope, I know who I am. Despite the fact that I am in prison, I’m not just anybody. I am a child of God, and that gives me strength.”
Jane was introduced to Crossroads Prison Ministries by her chaplain, Margaret. From the very first Bible study booklet, she felt something different. “I had been doing Bible study, yes, but Crossroads taught me how to set time aside—to read, understand, and answer questions. It built my character because, at the end of it all, I had to reflect on what I learned.”
Through Crossroads, Jane learned not to read the Bible the way she would a novel or a newspaper. “You need the guidance of the Holy Spirit to understand Scripture. It gave me humility to depend on Him.” She also discovered the importance of mentorship. “In life, you need a mentor—someone you can look up to. Each of us should have a mentor.”
For Jane, Crossroads has been more than a Bible study—it has been a guide for life. “It talks to your spirit, your soul, your mind. It teaches you how to go about your life, how to live with others, and how to learn from the Bible. You go deeper in Scripture—it forces you to read, to understand, and to grow. At the same time, it builds your character.”
Even in the hardest places, Jane has found that God is present. And through Crossroads, she has come to know Him in a way she never did before.
